Carter Montgomery, M.MFT

In life, we are going to face difficulties, and sometimes these difficulties weigh us down and leave us unable to see many paths forward. In such a dark state, it can be easy to lose hope or excitement about who we are or what our future holds.

Therapy is often the place where people learn that change is possible. It can help shine a light into the darkness, providing a process for clients to overcome these difficulties and reclaim a positive identity, hope, and self-empowerment.

As a therapist, I seek to partner with my clients, working with them to instill hope and take action that leads to the better life that they desire.

Education

B.A., Theology and Ministry, Lipscomb University

Therapist Experience

I have clinical experience working with a diverse group of clients, including individuals, couples, and families seeking help for a multitude of presenting issues.

I have also worked in faith-based settings, serving students (grades 6-12) and young adults (ages 22-35).

The therapy skills I have developed allow me to help my clients work through a broad array of problems. I know how to facilitate productive conversations between clients who hold different beliefs and perspectives from one another. I am trained to help clients know how to manage mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. My clinical skillset is designed to assist motivated clients in reaching their goals.

Therapy Interests

I work with a wide variety of clients, including middle and high schoolers, college students, men, couples, and families. My areas of special clinical interest include depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, communication issues, and other relationship problems.

Helping clients recover from their traumatic experiences is especially rewarding. As someone who has earned level one training in Brainspotting, I use this intervention commonly in my trauma work.

I value the power of relationships. Romantic and family relationships are sources of great meaning—and pain—for many clients. I seek to untangle this paradox for my relational clients through the integrated use of Emotionally Focused Therapy, Restoration Therapy, and the Gottman Method.

With all of my clients, I use an evidence-based, collaborative approach designed to lead them towards healing. Many of my most commonly used interventions come from Bowenian Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Attachment Theory-based models.
